HSBC Teams Volunteer For Fife
Created: 06/07/2026

Fife Voluntary Action (FVA) supported HSBC to set up three days of volunteering for their staff in Fife. HSBC is one of the world’s largest banking and financial services organisations and provides paid time off to volunteer to all staff.
HSBC staff in Fife chose to volunteer with two organisations in Dunfermline over three days. One day was spent at Baldridgeburn Pantry, a community food project that provides a range of food items to the local community, prioritising low cost options and the reduction of food waste. HSBC staff volunteered to help organise the stock room, arranging toiletries, household items and other stock. The pantry team appreciated the extra help, as the task had not been possible to do on top of their regular volunteer roles!
Two teams used their volunteer days at the Sanctuary Garden, a community garden located off the Kingseat Road in Dunfermline. The garden has a team of regular volunteers who have cleared the two acre space to create growing spaces, polytunnels, and more. The first team, a husband and wife duo, got stuck into planting seedlings and raking areas of the garden. The second team, featuring 8 HSBC staff, completed several tasks alongside the regular garden volunteers ahead of the garden open day that weekend.
One of the HSBC staff said “This is so good to be away from our screens” and enjoyed getting stuck in with a range of different gardening tasks. Grant Stewart, coordinator at the Sanctuary Garden, said: “The HSBC team volunteered at The Sanctuary Garden despite the forecast of pouring rain, that held off until after they left. The team made a significant difference to our Open Day preparations by erecting a shelter, clearing and leveling a large area, raking some compost into place and potting on loads of seedlings for the plant sale. They really enjoyed being away from their screens, team building and de-stressing by being outside and doing some light exercise. They also raved about the view over the forth valley. Their visit was perfectly timed and our usual volunteers enjoyed working alongside HSBC.”
Tamara Inkster, a member of HSBC’s community team, said “it feels good to be able to help out in the local community through my own work and feel like we have made a difference”.
This is a wonderful example of Employer-Supported Volunteering (ESV), where a company’s employees take paid time off to volunteer during work hours. For employees, an ESV programme can help them acquire new skills, develop themselves within their community, and give a sense of wellbeing. For companies, this can boost employee morale, wellbeing and engagement, and boost their brand within the community. In return, third sector organisations gain essential skills and support and raise the profile of the vital work they’re doing.
