Nationwide Volunteers Support Local Food Pantry
Created: 02/07/2026Fife Voluntary Action supported Nationwide to arrange a volunteering day at Baldridgeburn Pantry in Dunfermline
Fife Voluntary Action arranged the Employer Supported Volunteering Day with the team at Baldridgeburn Pantry.
Nationwide give their staff paid time off to volunteer in the local community, supporting charities and causes close to their heart. They are given 14 hours of citizenship time to use individually or as a team.
A team of their Dunfermline staff chose to volunteer with Baldridgeburn Pantry. The pantry provides food for local people every Tuesday at very low cost, reducing food waste in the area. The pantry’s volunteer team also runs a café at the same time, offering refreshments and hot, freshly cooked food for anyone who attends the pantry.
The team of five from Nationwide removed all food donations from the store cupboards and cleaned them out, date checking the stock as they went. They also helped to organise an area of the storage room and set out food from Fareshare donations.
Pantry volunteers shared how helpful it was to have extra hands on deck to clean up ahead of the weekly pantry. The volunteers collect food items from four local supermarkets and spend significant time preparing the pantry and café every week, and benefited from having help to complete extra tasks that they don’t always have time for.
A Nationwide staff member said “it’s great to be able to help the community and make a difference in one day.” Another shared how nice it was to take a break and do something different with their team.
This is a great example of Employer-Supported Volunteering (ESV), where a company offers their employees paid time off to volunteer during work hours. For employees, an ESV programme can help them acquire new skills, develop themselves within their community, and provide a sense of wellbeing. For companies, this can boost employee morale, wellbeing and engagement, and boost their brand within the community. In return, third sector organisations gain essential skills and support and raise the profile of the vital work they’re doing.
If your team or organisation would be interested in getting involved with ESV, please contact Fife Voluntary Action's Volunteering Development Team at [email protected].
