  • Volunteer Scotland: Reflections on ‘Bridging the Participation Gap’ Roundtable Series

    Created: 15/05/2026
    News/Events Category: Volunteering

Between November 2025 and March 2026, Volunteer Scotland hosted a series of nine roundtable events on the theme of ‘Bridging the Participation Gap’, engaging with 180 stakeholders including volunteers, the practice community (such as volunteer involving organisations and their volunteer managers) and enablers (policymakers and funders).

They have put together a report, containing seven main themes that have emerged from the series:

    1. Volunteer managers don’t have the resources they need
    2. Financial support for volunteering is fragile and constrained
    3. Volunteering pathways, while vital need to be clear and properly resourced
    4. Trustee recruitment and retention are sector-wide challenges
    5. Flexible volunteering roles are key to more inclusive participation
    6. Volunteers with lived experience enable effective and inclusive services
    7. Volunteers from and working with underrepresented groups are experiencing increased hostility
