DWP: Barriers to Work Removed for Disabled Benefit Claimants
Created: 05/05/2026The regulations underpinning the Government’s Right to Try policy have been laid in Parliament and came into force on 30 April 2026.
Right to Try is intended to support disabled people and people with health conditions who want to take steps towards work, including paid or voluntary work, by reducing the fear that attempting work will automatically lead to a benefits reassessment or loss of entitlement. Fear has long acted as a significant barrier to employment and these regulations represent an important step in addressing that concern.
The regulations establish in law that undertaking paid or voluntary work, in and of itself, will not trigger a Work Capability Assessment reassessment or a Personal Independence Payment award review. They do not prevent reassessment where there is a genuine change in circumstances or where there is suspected fraud, but they provide greater assurance that trying work alone will not result in an immediate reassessment.
