The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) has published new statistics on the number (and proportion) of children living in low income families across Great Britain by local area.

The statistics show that 8,455 children (13.9%) are in relative poverty before housing costs (BHC) in Fife in 2025. Fife also continues to track above Scotland for relative child poverty, before and after housing costs.

    • Levenmouth has the highest rate of child poverty, whilst Dunfermline has the lowest.
    • At ward level, relative child poverty (before housing costs) continues to be highest in Kirkcaldy Central and Buckhaven, Methil and Wemyss Villages.
    • While Fife is ranked 7 of 32 local authorities for child poverty, it now has two of its four constituencies in the 10 poorest in Scotland (before housing costs): Glenrothes and Mid Fife, and Cowdenbeath and Kirkcaldy.

Support for those who are struggling

Fife Health Promotion Service Workplace Team have teamed up with a new financial support tool called Lightning Reach, which has been launched to support those who are struggling.

Anyone on a low income or struggling financially can apply for help from a range of charities, trusts and even utility company hardship funds.

Lightning Reach simplifies the process of applying for help by allowing people to submit information just once to scan for multiple grants, utility discounts, and one-off payments from a range of organisations and charities.

Lightning Reach is a secure, online site. You can access Lightning Reach from the link below and staff are able to use it for themselves as well as those they are working with.

Access Lightning Reach via this link: https://www.fife.gov.uk/lrfife
