New Resource for Everyone Working with Children, Young People and Their Families
Created: 06/11/2025The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), in partnership with the Scottish Government and key stakeholders, has launched a new resource: Supporting Scotland’s Children: Core Knowledge and Values.
The online resource sets out the essential knowledge and values that everyone working or volunteering with babies, children, young people and families should share, including children’s rights, wellbeing, safeguarding and partnership working.
Hosted by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), the aim is that Supporting Scotland’s Children will be used widely across services, from education and health to social work and the third sector.
Why this matters
Supporting Scotland’s Children: Core Knowledge and Values describes what is fundamentally important to children, young people and their families, regardless of the service they use or their circumstances. For those working with children and young people, it sets out foundational principles needed to build positive relationships and uphold children’s rights.
The refreshed resource responds to significant developments since 2012, including The Promise’s call for a national values-based recruitment and workforce development framework. It reflects Scotland’s commitment to ensuring that all children grow up loved, safe and respected.
Who is it for?
It is designed for everyone whose role impacts the lives of children and families, including those in health, education, social services, justice, community services, cultural and creative industries, the voluntary and private sectors and adult services such as housing or substance use support.
