  • Trading Standards Scotland: Winter Fuel Allowance Scams

    Created: 28/07/2025
    News/Events Category: General News

There have been more reports of scam text messages and phone calls asking people to apply to receive an energy subsidy or Winter Fuel Allowance.

One recent text message appeared to be from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) and said the recipient had not claimed their 2024/25 'energy subsidy' of £300. They were asked to click a link and complete a form by the following day to receive the payment.

Some people have also received text messages asking them to click a link to apply for this year's Winter Fuel Allowance -  this link leads to a website using UK Government branding which asks for personal and credit card details.

One man was cold called and told he could claim the Winter Fuel Allowance following recent changes in Government policy.  The caller asked him to confirm his contact details and bank details to ensure that he received the payment. However, he felt suspicious as he had previously received the payment automatically, and so hung up.

If you are eligible to receive any cold weather or energy bill support payments, you do not need to apply for them. You will be paid automatically in the same way you usually get your benefit or tax credits.

In Scotland, the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment has replaced the Winter Fuel Payment. In 2025 this will be paid by Social Security Scotland. Find out more: www.mygov.scot/pension-age-winter-heating-payment

    How to avoid the scam

Be suspicious of any message or cold call asking you to apply for an energy bill rebate or discount.
DWP will never ask for your personal details via text message, email or unexpected cold call.

If you receive a text message, e-mail or cold call asking for your details or for a fee to 'apply' for a payment, do not click on any links or provide any details.

Forward suspicious text messages for free to 7726 and send suspicious e-mails to [email protected]
