Police Scotland Cyber Byte - Remote Access Scams
Created: 04/02/2025Whilst remote access is generally used legitimately, it is also utilised by scammers wanting to take control of peoples devices in an attempt to scam them and gain access to their accounts.
Many people are wary of phishing e-mails, and on occasions Remote Access scams can reach us in this format, but we also have to be wary of the unexpected phone call from someone supposedly from a tech company, a bank, or from a local or government authority who say they are needing access to our laptop, desktop, or other device. They will ask you to login to your device, talk you through a series of actions, and in some cases suggest you will need to do a software download.
This is most likely a scammer as no-one from a bank or a local or government authority would ask you for remote access to your device or to do a software download.
What you can do
If someone is remotely connected to your device and asks you to login to your bank account or show any personal information, they are most likely a scammer.
Don't follow their instructions, even if they say you need to pay them because they allege to have solved a problem you were having.
If you feel uncomfortable or insecure, hang up.
