  • Scottish Climate Change People's Panel Report Published

    Created: 15/04/2024
    News/Events Category: Climate/Environment

The Climate Change People's Panel is formed of randomly selected members of the public to scrutinise climate legislation by the Scottish Government.

    The questions posed were:

    • How effective has the Scottish Government been at engaging the public  on climate change and Scotland’s climate change targets?
    • What else (if anything) could the Scottish Government do to inform and involve the public to help meet Scotland’s climate change targets?

The report found that the Scottish Government is not doing enough to engage the public on climate change and Scotland's climate change targets.

Recommendations from the report will be discussed at the next committee meeting on 16 April 2024. Recommendations include:

    • Climate change to be a compulsory subject in the curriculum from primary into high school so that children are aware, engage and talk about change
    • An accountable and transparent action plan to be communicated by the Scottish Government so people can understand the messaging
    • A consistent, positive media campaign to share local and national success stories of tackling climate change
    • A requirement that businesses and organisations that receive funding from the Scottish Government need to invest in supporting public services linked to climate action and the local community
