intandem volunteer mentors spend time with young people aged 8-14, who are looked after at home or in a kinship care arrangement once a week.
The focus of mentoring sessions is to have fun, try new things in their local community and help them recognise their achievements as well as support them through the challenges they face too. Having a volunteer mentor and positive role model can make a huge difference to a young person's wellbeing.
Once an application has been received, references and PVGs checked and approved, there are 5 x 2 hour in person training sessions covering an Introduction to intandem, Children & Young People, the Role of the Mentor, Child Protection and Mentoring in Practise.
Volunteers receive open support as well as regular opportunities to reflect and review on how their match is progressing with the programme co-ordinator.
Out of pocket expenses paid?
Yes - Expenses for travel or fuel as well as activity costs are reimbursed by bank transfer weekly, fortnightly or monthly after sessions have taken place.
Public transport costs are covered in their entirety with a receipt and mileage is paid at 45p per mile.
Volunteer mentors need to be fun, approachable, open minded and non-judgemental.
Restrictions on who can volunteer
The role requires volunteers to be a trusted adult that a child or young person can look up to as a positive role model.
Across Fife, volunteer mentors are matched with young people within a pre-agreed reasonable travelling distance with all travel expenses being reimbursed by intandem.
They are especially interested in hearing from people in the West Fife, Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes and Levenmouth areas.
This opportunity is compatible with the Saltire Awards for volunteers aged 12-25.
