Enthusiastic Befrienders are required to help support people suffering from eating disorders and/or their carers to beat their illness. This is an interesting and rewarding role and full training is provided. Your role as a befriender will be to support and/or upskill the Befriendee over a 6-month period, by having a regular weekly phone call.
Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all psychiatric disorders. This is therefore a valuable opportunity to make a significant difference to people's lives by helping sufferers and their carers, discuss their feelings and concerns, to provide information and support and to look towards a more positive future. This role will initially be telephone befriending, based within your own home but has the potential to have some face to face befriending in the future.
Experience of eating disorders as a sufferer or carer is required for this role.
Volunteers will receive online training, that will include:
how you make your first call, key listening and coaching skills, alongside setting boundaries and staying safe. If supporting carers, the training will also cover Janet Treasure?s Collaborative Care Skills; an evidence based method for supporting someone with an eating disorder. All volunteers will receive ongoing help and support.
Out of pocket expenses paid?
Yes - Either public transport costs or mileage rates where applicable.
If travelling by your own car mileage rates will be paid, at present this is 35p per mile.
Volunteers must have first hand experience with eating disorders or have been a carer for someone with an eating disorder.
Volunteers should be friendly, reliable and non-judgemental.
