Citizen Advocates for the Young People Project come from all walks of life, with a shared commitment to help vulnerable young adults aged between 16 and 25, in communities across West Fife. Citizen Advocates provide invaluable support and friendship through:
Listening to someone in need and trying to understand the challenges they face; their point of view and finding out what makes them feel good and valued. Understanding their situation and what may be stopping them from getting what they want. Offering support to tell other people what they want or introducing them to others who may be able to help. Helping someone to know what choices they have and what the consequences of these choices might be. Enabling a person to become more independent and have more control over their life. Encourage hobbies and interests so that mutually enjoyed activities can be shared.
Every volunteer will be required to undergo a PVG check, provide 2 character references and complete the Advocate Preparation Training before being matched with a vulnerable adult. There will be a number of further training opportunities that will be offered to each volunteer but not essential. Each volunteer will be allocated to a development worker who will provide on-going support through informal one-to-one meetings.
Out of pocket expenses paid?
We look for ordinary responsible people with a positive attitude towards people with a disability who are able to put across the wishes of their Advocacy Partner, be patient, a good listener and willing to make an open ended friendship.
Across West Fife within community settings, at times to suit both partners. Some travel will be needed but volunteers will be matched with someone they are easily able to meet with. No travel expenses are available.
This opportunity is compatible with the Saltire Awards for volunteers aged 12-25.
