    News/Events Category: Job Vacancies

Post: Horticultural Summer Internship (up to 2 positions available, 8-12 weeks)
Salary £7.83 per hour 40 hours per week

St Andrews Botanic Garden, in conjunction with Friends of the Garden, is offering a horticultural summer internship opportunity for up to 2 suitable candidates for 2018. The candidate(s) will be enthusiastic about horticulture and will be aiming to establish themselves within the field of horticulture for their career.

St Andrews Botanic Garden (SABG) holds an exceptional, diverse and documented botanical collection in 18 beautiful acres, including half an acre of glasshouses. Located in the centre of the iconic town of St Andrews, it benefits from its links to this UK top 5 University and the global tourist interest in St Andrews.

You would be working with SABG at an exciting time in its 126 year history as it refocuses on making its gardens, plants and expertise relevant and accessible to a wider audience. SABG has recently gone through a transition to become an independent charitable trust and is in a challenging time of growth and development. In the past 3 years visitor numbers have increased over 80%, facilities have been upgraded and planning initiated for long-term development.

SABG has an income around £580 000 per year and employs 14FTE across a headcount of 23, including seasonal and occasional staff. The Internship is sponsored by the Friends of St Andrews Botanic Garden and was inaugurated in 2016 to commemorate the voluntary contribution to the Garden of Marigold Speir, Helen Dingle and Anne Lightwood.

It consists of an 8 - 12 week schedule working alongside experienced horticulturists and mentors and will include gaining experience across all aspects of horticulture and Garden maintenance. This will cover rock garden, soil types, vegetables, propagation and pruning, as well as glasshouse and collections maintenance. The intern will also have the opportunity to work alongside the education and outreach team.
