Employment Law and Human Trafficking Awareness combined 2-day course details

    Dates and time:

    • Monday 19 May 2025  9.00 - 4.30pm             (day 1)
    • Tuesday 20 May 2025  9.00 - 4.30pm            (day 2)

    Day 1:  Employment Law Training

All employees have basic rights in the workplace. It is important to understand these rights and know what employers and employers are entitled to.

The aim of this course is to build the capacity of the employability sector in Fife to have a better understanding of employment rights for their clients. You will explore common issues that arise when people start a new job and know where to get help if things cannot be resolved easily.

This session will be delivered by Kathleen Bolt from Mediation Services Ltd. Kathleen is a solicitor and mediator specialising in employment an equality law and workplace mediations.

    Kathleen will help participants to:

    • Understand the relevance of employment rights to employability policy, services, and clients
    • Understand basic employment and equality rights in the workplace and how these can support clients
    • Discuss common issues that arise in recruitment, the first few months in a new job, or when life challenges arise
    • Understand how to assist clients to consider the disclosure of personal information
    • Understand core relevant workplace policies and procedures
    • Understand how to signpost clients for help in the above areas

    Day 2:  Human Trafficking Awareness

This subject is an increasingly important aspect of safe employment for New Scots in Fife.

The buying and selling of men, women, and children happens in every local authority.

Hidden in plain sight, the majority of victims go unnoticed despite accessing services such as food banks, homeless hostels, drop-in centres, or other statutory services.

Human trafficking subjects people to some of the most degrading, violent, and fearful circumstances and profound and enduring effects. We all have a role to play in ending trafficking and exploitation in our communities.

This session will be delivered by Joy Gillespie, CEO of Survivors of Human Trafficking in Scotland (SOHTIS).

Through SOHTIS Joy works extensively with local groups and local authorities to support and identify victims of human trafficking and modern slavery.

As part of upskilling in human trafficking awareness, Joy will help participants understand:

    • What human trafficking is, its scale, and how it fits with legislation
    • Particular areas of risk
    • How to spot the signs within your specific area of expertise and beyond
    • The National Referral Mechanism (NRM), entitlements, and specialist support services available to victims
    • The barriers and challenges victims/survivors face
    • How to report while respecting professional boundaries
    • How to access support for themselves and their team

Participants attending on both days of thise course can attend the afternoon session on day 2 (Tuesday 20 May) to better understand how employment law and human trafficking are related, as exploitation of those who are experience abusive employment practices is far more common among those recently relocated to the UK and thus unfamiliar with UK law and expected employment practice.
