The course aim is to increase participants’ understanding of health literacy and its impacts on health and wellbeing.
Health literacy is about individuals having enough knowledge, understanding, skills and confidence to use health information, to be active partners in their care, and to navigate health and social care systems.
By the end of this course participants will have:
An understanding of what health literacy is and why it is important;
An understanding of how good health literacy skills can support with self-managing health conditions;
Knowledge of how poor health literacy leads to health inequalities;
Knowledge of who is at risk of poor health literacy and know how to support them to overcome the barriers they face when accessing health information;
The skills to apply health literacy tools and techniques to check for understanding.
Who should attend?
This course is particularly relevant to NHS Fife and Fife Health & Social Care staff who may be required to discuss health related issues with patients or service users.
