Human trafficking is possibly the most misunderstood crime in Scotland. We know that the buying and selling of men, women and children is happening in every Local Authority. Hidden in plain sight, the majority of victims go unnoticed despite accessing services such as food banks, homeless hostels, drop in centres or other statutory services. Human trafficking subjects people to some of the most degrading, violent and fearful circumstances with profound and enduring effects. We all have a role to play in ending trafficking and exploitation in our communities.

At this session, Joy Gillespie, CEO of Survivors of Human Trafficking in Scotland, will help us understand:

    • What human trafficking is, it's scale and how it fits with legislation
    • Particular areas of risk
    • How to spot the signs within your specific area of expertise and beyond
    • The National Referral Mechanism (NRM), entitlements and specialist support services available to victims
    • The barriers and challenges victims/survivors face
    • Know to report, professional boundaries and how to access support for you and your team
