Social Security Scotland - Young Carers urged to take up Young Carer Grant
Created: 30/03/2023Social Security Scotland are encouraging Scotland’s teenage carers to check if they are eligible for Young Carer Grant, which pays £360 annually.
The grant was introduced in 2019 to help young people with caring responsibilities, and is a Scottish Government benefit available to young people aged between 16 and 18 who are caring for someone who receives a disability benefit for an average of 16 hours a week.
Since its release £2.5m has been paid to young carers in Scotland, helping those with caring responsibilities to pay for essentials.
One of seven benefits available only in Scotland, it is available annually to those who are eligible and can be spent on anything the young person chooses. From 01 April 2023, the payment will increase from £326.65 to £359.65.
The payment is available to those at school, in further education, employed or unemployed. They can apply once a year as long as they remain eligible.
You can find out more about Young Carer Grant on the stakeholder resource section of the Social Security Scotland website, which also includes free to use marketing material.
