This course is aimed at practitioners working with families who are experiencing domestic abuse. It is suitable for those working with children, young people, adult victims/survivors of abuse and perpetrators. Participants explore the complexities of domestic abuse and steps involved in keeping children and young people safe from harm; recognising the impact of perpetrators coercive behaviour on adult and child victims. Participants are briefly introduced to the Safe & Together approach, which focuses on harm to children, supporting the non-abusing parent and holding the perpetrator to account. It is designed to support and enhance practice alongside existing child protection guidelines and GIRFEC obligations.

an understanding of the dynamics and impact of domestic abuse on mothers and children;
an awareness of the links between domestic abuse, child welfare and protection;
a basic understanding of the Safe and Together approach to domestic abuse.
