Friends of the Byre was founded in 1965 to be supportive of the Byre Theater, independent of the theater's then Board of Directors Since 2013 the University of St Andrews has been responsible for the day-to-day administration and fabric maintenance of the theater and there is now no need for a Board. The Friends is a registered charitable organisation and remains to support the theater, promote Friends of the Byre events held at the theater and and provide financial support to amateur dramatic and musical groups in the St Andrews and North East Fife area who perform at the Byre. This financial support is accrued from annual; subscriptions and fundraising events. Membership of the Friends of the Byre would be required. The Treasurer would maintain financial and membership records, oversee financial transactions, banking, reporting the current financial position to, and attendance at monthly committee meetings. There would also be an expectation of attendance at Friends of the Byre events.
