Without Trustees our scheme wouldn't exist and families and children wouldn't get the support they need. Being a Trustee can be rewarding and gives opportunities for personal development and the chance to give something back to the local community. Trustees help guide our scheme and contribute to our leadership and direction so staff can manage the day to day work. The Board are responsible for good governance and employ the staff team as well as overseeing the sound management of funds. The Board of Trustees work closely with the staff and work on a variety of things jointly such as fundraising and publicity.
We have an information pack that we send out to anyone interested. We'd then arrange an informal chat with the Chairperson and Senior Coordinator at the office. Home-Start UK provides on-going training and we have an intranet full of information and guidance for Trustees. We regularly have an "Away Day" for staff and volunteers.
Trustees come from all walks of life and you don't need specialist skills or qualifications to be a Trustee - common sense, time, flexibility.
The ability to work as part of a team and an understanding of the pressures faced by parents today are just as important to us.
Director, Trustee, Board/Committee member or Governor?!
Organisations have different names for the volunteers who are responsible for the running of the organisation - some are called Board members, some are Committee members, some may use the word Director for example. Broadly speaking, they mean the same thing - the people at the top who are ultimately responsible! These are important roles (for which training and support is available) and without volunteers at board level voluntary sector organisations could not exist.
